Nitro Circus Down Under: A Look at the Show’s Australian Legacy

That’s a wrap! The final Australian stop of the Nitro Circus “Off the Rails” show, proudly sponsored by Team Ignition, lit up Sydney’s CommBank Stadium in a one-night-only explosion of FMX, BMX, scooters, and pure spectacle. Fans filled the 360-degree arena as the 15-metre Giganta ramp and pyro blasts lit up the night. It was a fitting finish to this leg of the tour.

Best of all, the action isn’t slowing down anytime soon, with tour dates in the United States and Canada right around the corner.

The History of Nitro Circus in Australia & Beyond

If you’re new to the world of Nitro Circus, you may be wondering: where did the event series begin? And how did it reach Australian shores?

It all started as a passion project among a group of adrenaline junkies, including Travis Pastrana, Gregg Godfrey, and Jeremy Rawle. In addition to their fearlessness, the group had one thing: they loved capturing their chaos on camera. They started filming their outrageous stunts on BMX bikes, motorbikes, and skateboards in their own backyards. Eventually, they turned this DIY video series into a Nitro Circus DVD series.

As word spread about the DVDs, so did their following. The group even caught the eye of MTV, which catapulted Nitro Circus onto the global stage with a hit television series, headlined by Johnny Knoxville. With their high-octane antics lighting up screens worldwide, it was only a matter of time until the crew took to a different kind of stage: live touring.

By 2010, that dream was a reality. Extreme athletes from various disciplines traveled around the world to show off their skills, including Down Under. Given that Australia is an adventure hotspot, it was the perfect setting for these epic escapades.

In that first year alone, the tour came to the country’s biggest cities — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide — and attracted over 150,000 fans.

Since then, Nitro Circus has become a fixture in the Australian extreme sports scene. Every year, Aussies from far and wide travel to see these athletes perform next-level stunts, world firsts, and record-breaking tricks.

High-Flying Highlights: 5 of the Craziest Moments from Nitro Circus in Australia

Over the last 15 years, Nitro Circus has delivered fist-pumping feats, epic wipeouts, and everything in between. Here are 5 of the most memorable moments from Nitro’s Australian shows.

1. Ryan Williams & Dylan Devitt’s Joint Nothing Front Bike Flips

A BMX rider stretched out horizontally while holding the bike during an aerial trick in an arena.

For freestyle scooter and BMX rider Ryan Williams, the 2025 Nitro Circus Melbourne show was a big one. Not only because he was performing on home soil, but also because it was the biggest Australian show in Nitro Circus history, with a crowd of over 20,000 people.

To deliver the excitement his fellow Aussies deserved, Ryan knew that he’d have to pull off something jaw-dropping. And he knew just the person to help him execute his vision: fellow BMX rider, Dylan Devitt.

Together, the two headed to the top of the iconic Gigantaramp to perform a joint nothing front bike frontflip. The trick, which sees the rider let go of the bike mid-air, flipping it once, before grabbing and remounting it to land, is difficult enough to carry out solo. But two riders executing it side by side in perfect sync? That’s a new level entirely.

As the two pros hurtled down the ramp and into the air, the crowd held their breath — only to erupt in cheers when they successfully landed it.

Relive the thrills by checking out Ryan’s YouTube recap of the event (hint: the trick starts at 8:12).

2. Josh Sheehan Nails a Superman Double Backflip

Hailing from Donnybrook, Western Australia, FMX rider Josh Sheehan is no stranger to gravity-defying stunts. In 2015, he became the first-ever person to perform a triple backflip on a motorbike at Pastranaland, the home of Travis.

And if there’s one thing that’s certain about Sheehan, it’s that he’s not afraid to go off-script.

That’s exactly what he did at one Nitro Circus Australia show, pulling up to the ramp to pull an unexpected trick for the audience. Everyone watched from the edge of their seats to see what Sheehan had up his sleeve — and he didn’t disappoint.

Instead of a standard double backflip, Sheehan performed a double backflip superman, extending his legs during the first backflip. Then, he placed his legs back on the bike to finish out the trick and stick the landing. Spectators, commentators, fellow athletes, and Sheehan himself went into a frenzy, rejoicing at the unforgettable stunt.

3. Ryan Bean’s “Hole in One”

Ryan Bean is best known for sharing his extreme antics, such as cliff diving and BMX riding, with his 1.4 million followers on Instagram. Although the professional daredevil is a new addition to the Nitro Circus lineup — having made his debut at Nitro Circus 2025 in Brazil — he’s made a big splash.

He was even responsible for one of the most standout moments of the Australian Nitro Circus Live Tour in 2025. After riding down the ramp and catching air, Bean sailed off his bike and completed a double frontflip. The craziest part? He landed right in the hole of the zorb ball waiting on the other side.

The trick — aptly named a “hole in one” — was so ambitious that it made Bean one to watch among Aussies.

4. Travis Pastrana Stomps His First Double Backflip in Nearly 5 Years

A freestyle motorbike rider extended away from the bike while performing a mid-air stunt.

As mentioned earlier, Nitro Circus has been delighting and exciting Australian audiences since 2010. And from the very beginning, it’s made history.

On the opening night of the Melbourne event, Pastrana wanted to set the tone for the rest of the show. The perfect way to do that? By performing his first double backflip in nearly five years.

The stunt came about thanks to X Games Gold Medalist Cam Sinclair, who performed a double backflip on his motorbike at the event. This made him the second person to land the trick, the first being Pastrana himself. Given that the two of them were in the same room, Sinclair thought it only fitting that they both perform it. He challenged Pastrana to execute the stunt — and, despite saying he’d never do it again, Pastrana couldn’t refuse.

“I haven’t done this trick since 2006,” he said into the microphone. “But I’ll do it.”

After shaking Sinclair’s hand, Pastrana mounted his own motorbike and sailed into the air. True to form, he performed the trick cleanly, bringing the crowd to their feet.

5. Jaie Toohey & Andy Buckworth’s Triple Backflip

The Nitro Circus’ 2025 show in Newcastle was launched to new levels of excitement thanks to Jaie Toohey and Andy Buckworth. Together, the BMX riders carried out a tandem triple backflip, with Buckworth going first, followed closely by Toohey.

This stunt and event were particularly special for Toohey. As a Central Coast native, the Newcastle show was home turf for him. Not to mention, due to a devastating injury the year prior, Toohey wasn’t sure how long it would take for him to perform these stunts again.

In November 2024, Toohey posted to Instagram to let his followers know that he’d suffered a crash during training. As a result, he needed shoulder surgery, which prevented him from representing Australia in the BMX Racing World Championships.

Despite this setback, Toohey dedicated himself to healing and rehabilitation. After just a few short months, he was back on the bike and better than ever, performing tricks like his usual self.

With this injury only a year in his past, Jaie’s triple backflip was made all the more impressive. The only question remaining: what’s next?
